Dance Improvisation WORKSHOPS
Rosalind Masson graduated from London Contemporary Dance School in 2006 and now works as a freelance teacher and performer connected to La Nua in Edinburgh, Movement Research in N.Y.C. and Berlin based Labor Gras. She has been practising Contact Improvisation and Improvisation since 2003, learning the basics from Rick Nodine and Jovair Longo. Since then, she has gone on to work with many different practitioners in the field including Merav Israel, K.J. Holmes and Kirstie Simson. Rosalind's current research is influenced by Klein technique, focusing on skeletal alignment to find the most efficient pathway of the body through space and into movement. The workshop will cover the basic elements of contact improv such as rolling contact, weight sharing and simple lifts. Improvisation class will focus on group awareness, commitment to individual movement exploration and how to bring these skills into a shared performance experience supported by compositional structures.
Tom Pritchard trained at LABAN and after spending a year as an apprentice with SDT, Tom now works freelance in Glasgow. His primary interest lies in how through understanding and improvisation, dance and theatre can compliment one another, how through collaboration and compromise we can expand our creative practice. Significantly, this includes how we can be people in the space, real individuals rather than objects of performance. Part of this is how we come into contact with one another, how we can explore our physicality through one anothers bodies. Not only the floor as support but other bodies, to fall, fly, roll and slide and gain confidence in ourselves and how we can explore our environment. For me, contact allows us to retain our childlike intrigue. In the workshop we will explore how we can build our confidence of support from the floor to each other, travel and shift through space in contact and begin to view the world as a playground again. For me improvisation is how we can be alive as performers, movers, creators. It opens our eyes to the potentials of our environment, the people we enter into it with and allows new possibilities, movement and relationships to emerge. In improvisation we can always continue to learn, invest and be excited by movement and our own abilities. It is this passion that I'd like to share with you.
Merav Israel a movement practitioner, dancer, performer, teacher, choreographer, artistic director of LaNua. Has had a movement practice for over 10 years in Israel and Scotland. Her interest in movement is influenced by the movement school she has graduated in Jerusalem, which is dedicated to alternative movement practices from Eshkol-Vachman notation to martial arts with particular link to the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. Her movement work is not interested in a particular dance style but with openness to body-mind approaches and the potential to graceful and intelligent physical expression_ in each and every person. My interest in improvisation and contact improvisation is in the beauty, truth and sense of joy and freedom I perceive in these forms and a sense of exploration and discovery that is shared in a group. In the workshops we will find a way to dip into our intelligent body structure and find personal inspiration in our own discoveries and connections. In contact improvisation we will go through basic skills of awareness to bone and weight. In improvisation we will technically work with responsiveness and ability to develop our own dance and find structure in relating to others.
